2. Define the need

→ Defining the need is an important step in the design of digital services that are more respectful of the user. It consists of several steps:
Eliminating what is not essential
By eliminating non-essential elements, there will be fewer elements that capture and distract the user's attention. This will allow the user to focus on the initial use of the service.
When we focus on the essential, we avoid asking for non-essential information or elements.
Example
The user will need less time to fill out a form with just the necessary fields for the operation of the service. In comparison with a form with unnecessary elements (ads, links to other additional elements, etc.).
Focusing on the essential
It is essential to ensure that the digital service meets the essential needs of users. By focusing on the essential, we minimise the risk of error, adding dark patterns and distracting elements.
Ultimately, this allows for greater user satisfaction with the use of the digital service. And intrinsically a loyalty to the digital service.
Example
For a site about a company, provide essential information about this company, for example:
- the value proposition;
- the contact.
A non-essential element could be the details of all their old projects.
Defining the purpose of the service
- What does the user need/want to do with this service?
- Does the service aligns with the users' needs?
- Is there any non-essential information in this service that can be removed?
